Ryan Hawk's insatiable curiosity about leadership has not only shaped his own career but has also profoundly influenced countless others, including myself. Since launching "The Learning Leader Show" in 2015, Hawk has consistently delivered weekly episodes that dive deep into the minds of exceptional leaders across various fields.

As a loyal listener since 2018, I've had the privilege of absorbing wisdom from some of the world's most unique and brilliant thinkers, often revisiting episodes two or three times to fully grasp their insights. Hawk's dedication to continuous learning is evident in his prolific output. With over 700 episodes recorded over more than ten years, his podcast has earned accolades from prestigious publications. Forbes dubbed it "the most dynamic leadership podcast around," while Inc. Magazine recognized it as "one of the 5 podcasts to make you a smarter leader". This recognition is a testament to the quality and impact of Hawk's work.

The influence of "The Learning Leader Show" extends beyond the audio medium. Hawk has authored four impactful books: "Welcome to Management," "The Pursuit of Excellence," "The Score That Matters," and he just released my favorite of his books “The Price of Becoming.” Each book offers valuable insights and practical advice for aspiring leaders.

Personally, Hawk's work has been transformative. His books and podcast have opened my eyes to new perspectives and strategies, significantly aiding my journey to become a better leader, father, and husband. The diverse range of guests on his show, from CEOs and entrepreneurs to best-selling authors and professional athletes, has exposed me to ideas and experiences I might never have encountered otherwise.

Here are a few leadership takeaways from Ryan Hawk that have impacted my life immensely:

Follow Your Curiosity

Ryan Hawk emphasizes the importance of following one’s curiosity as a driving force for personal and professional growth. He believes that curiosity acts as "high-octane fuel” or “jet fuel" for development, propelling individuals to explore new ideas and learn from diverse experiences. In his discussions, Hawk highlights that pursuing curiosity with great rigor can lead to remarkable outcomes, fostering a mindset that values continuous learning and improvement.

He encourages people to engage deeply with their interests, ask meaningful questions, and embrace a beginner's mindset, which allows for deeper connections and understanding of others. By prioritizing curiosity, Hawk illustrates how individuals can cultivate richer relationships and unlock new opportunities for success in their lives and careers.

The idea of building a better organization has been a driving force in my life for years. My curiosity on how to successfully do this is what lead me to Ryan’s show and helped me develop my Planetary Gear model for building a well-balanced and high performing organization.

Developing a Writing Practice

One of the most significant impacts of Hawk's influence has been on my own creative pursuits. Inspired by his consistent output and dedication to personal growth, I embarked on a consistent writing practice. Hawk believes that the most effective leaders have a writing practice because it helps crystalize thought. This commitment has led me to publish weekly blog posts and I have been working on a book, both endeavors I might not have undertaken without the motivation drawn from Hawk's example.

A consistent writing practice has served as a powerful tool for developing thought, it has allowed me to clarify ideas and articulate them more effectively. By regularly putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, I engage in a reflective process that encourages deeper exploration of their beliefs, experiences, and insights. This practice not only helps me organize scattered thoughts but also fosters critical thinking, as the act of writing requires one to analyze, synthesize and seek out new information.

Build Discipline and Consistency

Building discipline and consistency is indeed more about embracing the journey rather than fixating on the destination. This shift in mindset transforms daily actions into a sustainable, growth-oriented process. In the workplace, we have implemented systems focused on continuous improvement and found superior results compared to solely pursuing end goals.

This principle has also integrated into my personal life, by committing to a consistent workout regimen for over five years without missing a day, I have created a habit that transcends short-term fitness goals. I have found similar results in my artistic pursuits, by emphasizing weekly painting systems rather than setting specific artwork targets I not only tripled my output but also enhanced the quality of my work.

These examples demonstrate how creating robust systems and focusing on the process can lead to remarkable long-term achievements and personal growth. The power lies in the cumulative effect of small, consistent actions over time, proving that the journey itself is where true transformation and excellence are cultivated.

Hawk's background as a college quarterback at Ohio University adds another layer of relatability to his leadership insights. His transition from athlete to leadership guru demonstrates the versatility and applicability of the principles he discusses.

As a gesture of gratitude for the profound influence Hawk has had on my life, I decided to create a painting of him and send it to him for Christmas. This act not only symbolizes the personal connection I feel to his work but also reflects the creative inspiration he has instilled in me. He has been my lifting partner at the gym, the passenger on many car rides and my friend and mentor on this journey to build a better organization.

Through his emphasis on continuous learning, excellence, and intentional culture-building, we've created a setting that prioritizes people, culture, environment and performance. By focusing on these key areas and developing what I call CivicMetrics, we've been able to measure and improve our performance consistently. This approach has not only enhanced our operational efficiency but has also cultivated a workplace where team members feel valued and motivated to excel. As a result,  our department is setting a new standard for how Public Works Departments and cities can be run effectively and dynamically.
