The Six Roots of Leadership


Leadership doesn’t grow from stone pillars—it grows from living roots. Before you can lead any system, you have to cultivate the six roots of leadership within yourself. These aren’t tactics or management tricks. They’re the inner disciplines, quiet decisions, and daily reps that make everything else possible.

Picture a tree: the underground roots anchor the trunk—you, the leader—and feed the canopy above—your team and organization. The stronger the roots, the higher the growth. Here’s what those six roots look like.


1. Identity: Call Yourself a Leader

The first step is ownership. You can’t become what you’re unwilling to call yourself.

When I first started playing guitar, it took years before I felt comfortable saying, “I’m a guitar player.” I didn’t have the skill to match the title, but claiming it shaped how I practiced and saw myself.

Leadership works the same way. You don’t wait until you’re perfect to say “I’m a leader.” You say it—and then start living it. That identity becomes your anchor, guiding how you show up each day and giving you permission to grow, fail, and improve along the way.


2. Model the Greats

Once you’ve owned the identity, learn from those who play the instrument well.

Guitarists start by learning other people’s songs. You borrow riffs, tones, and phrasing until your style emerges. Leadership isn’t different—you study great leaders, borrow what works, leave what doesn’t, and evolve your own voice.

You don’t have to invent leadership from scratch. Greatness leaves clues everywhere—books, mentors, coaches, even your kids’ sports teams. Study greatness until it sounds like you.


3. Self‑Mastery

Before you lead others, you have to lead yourself.

Your habits, focus, and integrity set the temperature for your team. People notice how you show up—if you’re early, focused, and steady when things go wrong. Leadership is more “thermostat” than “thermometer.” You set the tone first.

Discipline might not get applause, but it builds trust. Every small choice—the hallway conversations, the follow‑through, the quiet accountability—compounds into credibility.


4. Relationships: Connection Is the Work

No one leads alone. Influence only thrives through trust and connection.

Like a band that plays in tune, great teams move as one because they know each other deeply. The best leadership work happens in the spaces between—lunch tables, practice fields, quick check‑ins.

Connection isn’t a side project; it’s the root system of leadership. When your people know you care, everything else—feedback, alignment, performance—gets easier.


5. Impact Over Position

True leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about changed lives.

A guitar player’s greatness isn’t in technique; it’s in the sound that moves people. Likewise, leadership’s measure isn’t authority, but the difference you make in others.

Ask yourself: Are people better because I’m here? Impact endures where position fades.


6. Practice: Hone the Craft Daily

Leadership isn’t a destination; it’s deliberate practice.

Like building calluses on a guitar, each day’s reps shape your instincts. What looks effortless in a crisis is usually the result of a thousand quiet choices.

The danger isn’t failure—it’s complacency. Keep practicing the fundamentals: reflection, discipline, listening, and growth. They’re the daily scales that turn good leaders into great ones.


Rooted Leadership

The spotlight may motivate you, but the roots make you stand tall.
