Communication as the Planetary Carrier: The Hidden Engine in My Leadership Model

ree

When I developed my organizational model based on a planetary gear, I wanted each part to have real meaning. People are at the center as the sun gear. Performance, culture, and environment are the three planet gears that orbit around them. Leadership is the ring gear holding everything together. But there is often one part that gets overlooked – the planetary carrier. For me, this perfectly represents communication within an organization.

Why Communication is the Carrier

Think about how a planetary gear works. The carrier is what connects all the planet gears and makes sure they move together around the sun gear. In my model that is exactly what communication does. It connects performance, culture, and environment, making sure they all work together with people at the core.

  • Keeping everything in Sync: Just like the carrier keeps the planet gears spinning smoothly together, communication keeps everyone in the organization on the same page. Without it, teams and departments would go off in different directions, and nothing would work as it should.

  • Sharing Energy and Ideas: The carrier doesn’t just hold the gears – it also helps transfer energy through the whole system. In the same way communication spreads information, ideas, and feedback throughout the organization. It is how we make sure everyone knows what’s going on and feels empowered to contribute.

  • Building Trust and Connection: The carrier is the backbone of the gear system, and communication is the backbone of any organization. It’s what builds trust, creates relationships, and helps people feel valued and connected to our mission and to each other.

  • Helping Us Adapt: Just as the carrier allows the gear system to handle different speeds and loads, good communication helps us to adapt to change, solve problems, and keep improving. When people can share feedback and ideas openly, we’re able to learn and grow together.

The Carrier Might Be Hidden, But It’s Essential

The planetary carrier isn’t the flashiest part of the gear system, but without, nothing else would work. I see communication the same way in an organization. It’s easy to take for granted, but it’s essential. Communication is what lets leadership hold everything together, keeps people at the center and brings performance, culture, and environment into harmony.

If there is one thing I want people to remember from my model, it’s this: Communication is the hidden engine that makes everything else possible. When we get communication right, we create a strong, unified organization where everyone can do their best work – together.
